I guess in response to my bringing a cupcake and NOT sharing, the Boss brought back 2 cupcakes after lunch for the 5 of us to taste.  Said cupcakes were from Sugar Bakery and Cafe a few blocks from work.  Since I had the equipment available, these frumpy cupcakes entered the photo studio:

I don’t think I’d walk a few blocks for these cupcakes.  Granted, I am probably biased since I experience cupcakes made by bakeries that specialize in cupcakes.  (And to my aunt, cupcakes are NOT just little cakes.)  I tried the red velvet just to make 100% sure that I don’t like red velvet cake.  It tasted like red dye as I expected.  The cream cheese icing was good: nice and creamy with a sour, citrus note.  The cupcake was touted as “filled with truffle”, but the filling seemed to be a spread on top below the icing.  Granted, I only had 1/4 of a cupcake, but got only a trace of chocolatey goodness.   My feelings about red velvet are unchanged.

The second cupcake was a Hostess® wanna-be.   I wanted to like it, I really did.  It was like a homely dog in need of love.  Unfortunately, this dog had fleas.  The chocolate cake was dry and  there was a only a dime-sized dollop of cream inside.  Once again, not enough to be considered “filled”.  The icing was good;  it reminded me of the cooked chocolate icing my grandmother used to make.  Fudgy.   I almost think I would have rather had an honest to goodness, extremely processed Hostess® cupcake.

So, today I visited Coffee To a Tea’s Sugar Rush Bakery to give the neighborhood folks a chance.  (Actually, all other cupcake places were a bit out of the way going home.   I should have grabbed the steering wheel from Mr Shuck and turned sharply to the right towards Yellow Leaf when I had the chance.    Oh, well.  I just looked and the flavors today were Spumoni, Pistachio, and Lavender Lemonade.  I would have liked to have tasted the last one….)

        Today’s sampling from Sugar Rush:

Sir Turtle: Chocolate cake with ganache frosting with caramel and pecans.  There was a tiny amount of ganache filling inside very dry chocolate cake.  The icing was a glimmer of a bright spot: like a tiny taste of truffle.  It wasn’t enough shine to bring this cupcake up to “good” though.  I only ate half of it.

Cafe Au Lait:  vanilla cake with espresso buttercream.  I don’t know what made me try anything from Sugar Rush with vanilla cake.  The cake was dry and reminded me of grocery store birthday cake.  The buttercream had a nice subtle coffee flavor, but was a mite grainy.

Oh…and I don’t think they were spectacularly beautiful either.

So, I called Yellow Leaf today to see what flavors they had for the day.  Mr Shuck was 2 blocks away volunteering, so I called him to see if he’d pick me up a Mexican Chocolate cupcake.  He agreed.  I thought about it ALL DAY.  I got in the car at the end of the day and was told he forgot!   I still love him.  Since I was in the cupcake mood (when am I not?), we stopped off at Coffee to a Tea in West Seattle to see what Sugar Rush had to offer for the day.  I chose a vanilla cupcake filled with chocolate mousse and dipped in chocolate ganache.

My review:  Extremely cute cupcake. I loved the little flowers.  Very “Life is Good“.   The ganache frosting was lovely.  (I actually think the description said that it was truffle dipped.).  The chocolate mousse inside was creamy, but tasted a lot like J-ello chocolate pudding.  The cake was spongey.  I don’t think I like the texture of sponge cake.  I would eat it again if it was presented to me, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase one.
