      • Saint Cupcake Deluxe in Portland

        May 4th

Saint Cupcake Deluxe was giving away free mini cupcakes so we decided to go there instead of plain old Saint Cupcake.  Also, why go for plain, when you can have deluxe?

Through the window at St Cupcake Deluxe

The shop was very cute, but tiny.  It is tucked into the alcove of a trendy home decor shop called Noun.  Apparently the cupcakes had just been cleaned out by a frantic mother whose own baking had not turned out as expected.  The “Dots” were larger than my minis, but smaller than a regular size cupcake.   The cupcakes are not made on site, but are brought in from the original Saint Cupcake.  We sampled Coconut, Carrot, and Chocolate with Vanilla icing.

The coconut was very nice with a cream cheese icing dipped in toasted coconut to balance out the sweetness.

The carrot cake was moist and delicately spiced, but the icing was a little too sweet (and lacking coconut to help).

Chocolate with Vanilla Icing from St Cupcake Deluxe

The chocolate cupcake must have been okay as I didn’t make any notes about it.  I do recall the sugar crystals on top being a bit distracting.

Overall, I think the cupcakes were okay.  If I was in the neighborhood, I’d probably stop by, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to pick one of these little cakes up.

      • New Cupcakes from Dahlia Bakery

        Apr 15th

So after a useless doctor’s appointment, I felt a little “cupcake-y”.  I had to pick up Mr Shuck downtown and Dahlia Bakery was on the way…

Orange Vanilla Cupcake from Dahlia Bakery

The Orange Vanilla cupcake looked much better at the bakery.  I obviously didn’t exercise enough care in the car and my cupcake turned over in the Chinese takeout container.   The cake was a little dense and chewy, but still moist with mild orange flavor.  The icing, I think an Italian meringue butter cream, had stronger orange flavor from flecks of zest.  The cake was garnished with a strip of candied orange zest and curls of white chocolate.   My rating: ♥♥♥.  I’d gladly pay for this again, but I probably wouldn’t drive out of the way.  I like the way they coordinate their flavor with the liner.  I’m not willing to pay extra to dress my cupcakes in pretty liners since I they are definitely a labor of love not profit.  White liners are cheaper.

Rocky Road Cupcake from Dahlia Bakery: Click to enlarge

The Rocky Road cupcake wasn’t very rocky.  I think I experienced only 2 or 3 nuts.  Not very much crunch there.  The cake was was moist and full of bittersweet chocolate flavor.  The marshmallow meringue was nice and fluffy, but a bit grainy, like the sugar hadn’t dissolved completely.  In spite of the lack of nuts and some graininess, I enjoyed this cupcake.  My rating: ♥♥ 1/2.  I might get it again if I was in the area.  It would depend on what else they had instead.

On a side note…I drifted into Yellow Leaf because Mr Shuck was waiting for me next to their bakery.  I was hoping for something spectacularly yummy like Pancakes and Bacon, but they didn’t have anything new or exciting today.  Maybe next time!

      • The Phoenix Cake at Bakery Nouveau

Posted at 7:28 pm by MLea
        Mar 28th

        From Bakery Nouveau’s website:

        Phoenix
This cake scored the highest points in the National Pastry Championship, 2005. It is a triple layer mousse cake with a delicate balance of pear mousse, 70% chocolate mousse, caramel mousse, pecan dacquoise and chocolate sponge cake. All covered with a caramel glaze

I’ll be honest.  I had to go to Wikipedia to get the definition of dacquoise, which is apparently a nut meringue.

This was wonderful.  This would have been wonderful after a nice meal at a nice restaurant.  It’s even more wonderful to be able to dash out (see previous post) to your neighborhood bakery (if you happen to live near the Junction in West Seattle) and just pick one up on the spur of the moment.  It was creamy and delicate.  There was nice crunch at the bottom from the dacquoise.  And just to clarify that it was Cupcake Addict appropriate….it was about the size of a jumbo cupcake AND there was a tiny approximately 1/4 inch thick layer of sponge cake in there just under the pecan layer.   (Cup shaped and cake containing = cupcake, no matter how posh it may be.)  I honestly didn’t notice the pear mousse.  Perhaps that was all part of the “delicate balance”…leaving the pear mousse as a subtle accent flavor not a central one.  This was a bit rich, perhaps from the caramel glaze, but not overly sweet.   (You should all know how I feel about caramel by now.)   Mr Shuck had about 2 bite portion (which he thought was “good stuff”).  I had the rest.  It was worth the $5.50 that I paid for it.  It would have been worth the $5.50 AND the 2 mile round trip walk that would have gotten me there and back if it hadn’t been raining.  (Raining in Seattle?  Who’d have thunk it?!)

      • Cupcake Snobery again

Posted at 6:14 pm by MLea
        Mar 28th

I had sub-par cupcakes today.  Once again, I think I’ve become too picky.   Mr Shuck and I were originally going downtown to try the new flavors at Dahlia Bakery (Pistachio with Brown Sugar or Chocolate with Dulce De Leche), but it’s Sunday.  It was brunch time, so any street parking would be taken by those brunching across the street at Lola.  Yada Yada Yada.  We made an attempt at Bakery Nouveau, but there were no “little cakes”.  There were lots of yummy looking cake SLICES, but I felt I had a duty to report on a new or fabulous cupcake.  I pondered getting the Phoenix ….crap.  I just read the description.  I’m going for the Phoenix cake!  I’ll be back…..

      • Gluten Free from Flying Apron

Posted at 9:23 pm by MLea
        Feb 15th

I gave my gluten-free sister a Flying Apron cookbook for her birthday, not realizing that the Flying Apron bakery is in Seattle. In honor of Presidents’ Day, Mr Shuck and I ventured to Fremont to test out their wares. The bakery was fairly large, with several tables and (judging from the number of laptops) WiFi. They seemed to have a wide variety of items to choose from; pretty impressive since they are gluten, dairy, and egg free.
They had 4 different cupcakes to choose from today. 2 had raspberry jam on them, so I had to pass on those. We ended up with Cardamom/Chai and Chocolate/Chocolate.

Gluten Free Chocolate cupcake from Flying Apron: click to enlarge

My first taste was of the Chocolate/Chocolate. Ingredients: brown rice flour, garbanzo bean flour, maple syrup, cocoa, canola oil, dark chocolate, palm oil, vanilla, baking soda and sea salt.

If I didn’t know this was gluten free/vegan/etc, I would have thought it was just a regular cupcake.  The cake had a bit of an after taste and could have been more chocolate-y, but overall, it was very good.  It was moist, but seemed to break up a bit too easily, I assume due to the lack of gluten.   I would eat this again, but with the Black Bottom at Simply Desserts right across the street, I probably would choose to have some gluten.  Rating: ♥♥

Gluten Free Cardamom Chai from Flying Apron: Click to enlarge.

The Cardamom Chai smelled AMAZING.  Ingredients: brown rice flour, garbanzo bean flour, concentrated pineapple, pear and peach juices, canola oil, evaporated cane juice, palm oil, cardamom, cinnamon, chai, vanilla extract, baking soda and sea salt.  I tried to get a photo that would show the speckles of spice in the icing, but it didn’t turn out as true to life as I would have liked. (I was unwilling to go downstairs to retrieve the “cupcake photo studio”.)
Mr Shuck thought this cupcake deserved 3♥’s.   I felt the flavor was excellent, but the texture was off putting to me. Both the icing and the cake were grainy and mealy.   I didn’t finish my cupcake and wouldn’t get this again.  Rating: ♥.

Even though I didn’t like one of the cupcakes, I like The Flying Apron.  I think it’s great for those that have dietary restrictions, like my sister.  I love the fact that their menu has all the ingredients listed in case someone has other allergies and that it is largely organic and vegan.  Since I have other choices, I will choose to go elsewhere, but I think it’s a great option for those that can’t just pick up baked goods anywhere.  The chocolate cupcake was good enough to serve to everyone.

      • Wink Cupcakes…will it be worth the trip?

        Feb 12th

So….there’s a new cupcakery in Seattle.  Wink Cupcakes, which was delivery only, has opened up a shop in Queen Anne.  We’ll be stopping by tomorrow.  I am intrigued by the “Brett Michaels Rock of Love Cupcake”: Spicy Jalapeño Chocolate Cake with Chilli Lime Buttercream.

      • More Wedding Cupcake photos

        Feb 12th

So, my brother, who is currently serving in the Army in Afghanistan, found the time to send copies of the photos he took at my wedding (last April).  He got a really good one of my cupcakes.

Top of the cupcake tower, with flying pigOur cupcakes were done by Sweet Pockets in Atlanta.  We had a huge carrot cupcake on top to cut (and to not share with guests!).  The other flavors (I think) were strawberry, caramel apple and lemon.    I must admit, we chose this cupcakery mainly because they were the only cupcake place in Atlanta with a bronze cupcake stand…which looked better at Magnolia Hall, our wedding/reception site, than the white ones that every other place had.   I was EXTREMELY happy with Lennie and staff at Sweet Pockets.  Most of our planning had to be done via email and we couldn’t decide on flavors until the day before the wedding.  The cupcakes were great.  The display was pretty.  Only complaint:  our guests didn’t eat enough cupcakes!  We were giving cupcakes away to everyone at the hotel the day after the wedding.   We had the pigs flying around the cupcakes because it took us a REALLY long time (13 years) to get married.  Pigs were definitely flying!

This is totally unrelated, but was on the disc.  My favorite food, which was one of the buffet choices at my wedding: Shrimp and grits.

      • Grocery store cupcakes, Part 2

Posted at 6:04 pm by MLea
        Jan 22nd

Mr Shuck saw these cupcakes at the Red Apple and thought that even if they didn’t turn out to be tasty, I’d have something to write about.

        Fantasia Cupcakes: Click to enlarge

According to GroceryHeadquarters.com, “It’s hard to find a more comforting food than Best Brands’ new super-decadent Fantasia Cupcakes, available in vanilla bean and rich dark chocolate ganache flavors.” “Fantasia Cupcakes address the trend of having a gourmet meal and a great, portion-controlled dessert,” says Bill Keeney, director national accounts, Best Brands Corp., the Minnetonka, Minn.-based purveyor of cakes, cupcakes, muffins, dough and baking mixes.

I wasn’t very optimistic, when the fine print described them as “artificially flavored”.

The icing was alright:  it was rich and creamy with deep chocolate flavor.  The cake was moist and dense, but had an artificial chocolate taste.    I don’t think they were worth the $2.99 that Mr Shuck paid for both of them.  I think he would probably try them again, though…

      • Bakery Nouveau’s Mini Snowball cake

Posted at 6:40 pm by MLea
        Dec 27th

So this isn’t REALLY a cupcake, but what is a cupcake, really?  Isn’t it just a little cake.

I absolutely LOVE Bakery Nouveau in West Seattle.   Mr Shuck, his parents and I stopped by for a little treat after shopping at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market.   The in-laws got scones and Danish (boring).  I got this amazing little Snowball cake, described on their website as follows:  “Our rich vanilla cake, layered with coconut cream and milk chocolate crémeux.”

Mini Snowball Cake from Bakery Nouveau: Click to enlarge

This is an amazing cake: extremely moist and soft cake layers (probably explains why it’s a little wonkey), sweet and rich chocolate filling in the middle, nice coconut flavor.   Mr Shuck and I both loved it.  Rating: ♥♥♥♥
