      • Pandan Cupcake from Yellow Leaf

        Pandan photo stolen from Wikipedia

Today is Wednesday and Mr Shuck working downtown, so he asked if I wanted a treat.  I called ahead to get the flavors of the day and was torn between coconut lime and pandan.   When asked, Mike told me that pandan is an Asian leaf.  It seemed exotic, so that’s the one I chose.   Apparently the leaves have a nutty, botanical fragrance and will repel cockroaches.   Bonus!

This is probably one of my least favorite flavors from Yellow Leaf.   It was okay… I finished it… It didn’t have much flavor.   I definitely didn’t get “nutty”.  I definitely saw “botanical” because it was VERY GREEN.   I also didn’t enjoy the icing.  Italian Meringue butter cream without additional flavor tastes like it’s main ingredient, butter.  There was a sprinkling of coconut on top which cut the butteriness a bit at least.

Pandan Cupcake, unwrapped. How sad is it that it matches my house?

My rating:  ♥1/2.  I might eat this again if I didn’t have to pay for it, but it would really depend on how hungry I was and what other options were available.

      • Salted Caramel from Yellow Leaf

I was very excited when Mr Shuck told me he got a present for me last week.  I knew he was downtown and was hoping for a Yellow Leaf cupcake.  I got 2!  One was the Chocolate Joy, an old favorite.  The other was a new flavor for me, Salted Caramel.  Yellow Leaf rarely disappoints me and this cupcake was no exception.

Have I mentioned that I like bacon?

Please forgive the photo.  This was taken with a coworkers IPhone.

So this was a very tasty cupcake.  Have I mentioned that I like bacon?  The vanilla cake was studded with bacon bits and topped with a maple Italian meringue butter cream.  The bacon bits on top added some texture.  I would definitely go out of my way for this cupcake!  ♥♥♥♥

      • Marshmallow Bliss from Yellow Leaf

So I thought these cupcakes were very cute for Easter.

This is a chocolate cake filled with a tunnel of marshmallow.  It looked better than it tasted.  The cake was okay.  It was a bit dry for Yellow Leaf.  Usually they make an incredibly moist cake.  The marshmallow egg on top was cute, but the icing didn’t have much flavor.  The marshmallow interior was very firm and chewy.

Rating: ♥♥.  It’d eat this again, if passed at a party, but I wouldn’t pay for the privilege.

      • Chocolate Caramel Cashew from Yellow Leaf

        Jan 6th

Mr Shuck surprised me with a cupcake today and supported the pups at the same time.  Yellow Leaf’s Charity Cupcake for January and February is Chocolate Caramel Cashew and $1 of each sale goes to the Seattle Humane Society.

My thoughts:  The cake was much drier than usual for Yellow Leaf.  The chocolate layer was adequate, but the flavor in the other layer was indiscernible.  The icing was just as generic.  The little chocolate covered cashew on top was the highlight of the cake: sweet and salty and crunchy.  My rating: ♥♥ 1/2.  I’d buy it again if at Yellow Leaf, but only because part of the price goes to the Humane Society.   It was miles above their previous “charity cupcakes”.

      • Champagne Truffle from Yellow Leaf

        Dec 30th

I have the most wonderful husband.  He called before leaving downtown to see if I needed a cupcake.  A quick glance at my cell phone revealed the flavors of the day Tweeted out from Yellow Leaf:  Champagne Truffle, Coconut Lime, and Black and White.

I was very happy with this cupcake overall.  The icing was fine: maybe slight wine-y flavor, but I could have imagined it.  The sparkly sprinkles made it festive and gave texture.  The chocolate cupcake was richly chocolate-y and there was what I think was intended to be a truffle in the center.   It was tasty, but a little hard for a truffle.   The chocolate icing layer on top of the cupcake underneath the Italian meringue butter cream gave a pleasant crunch for added texture.  Rating: ♥♥♥ 1/2

So, after 2 weeks of having a horrible cold and sinus infection and having no cupcakes because my sense of taste was off, I am finally back to cupcake work.  Mr. Shuck was downtown and stopped by Yellow Leaf for me.  I don’t recall the other selections, but Chocolate Covered Cherry and Italian Eggnog appealed to me.  (Actually the eggnog didn’t appeal to me, but it was seasonal, so I gave it a shot.)

This cupcake wasn’t what I was expecting when i heard the name “chocolate covered cherry”.  I was expecting something very chocolatey with some cherry in the middle.  I was hoping and praying that there was no maraschino cherry hiding inside the cupcake somewhere.  At least I got that wish.  What I ended up with was a cherry flavored cupcake with a thin layer of chocolate on top topped with pink Italian meringue butter cream and a chocolate drizzle.  The cake was nice: firm and moist with a fine crumb, but it didn’t really have much flavor.  If I didn’t know it was supposed to be cherry, I couldn’t have identified it as being cherry.  The only chocolate was the layer between the icing and the cake and it did not have a very rich flavor.  The icing was okay, perhaps because the chocolate drizzle gave it a little extra texture.  I ate it.  That says something.  Rating:  ♥♥

Italian Eggnog:  I’m not sure why it’s Italian Eggnog.  Maybe because of the Italian meringue butter cream on top?  You could probably go back and read my comments about the chocolate covered cherry because this will sound pretty familiar.  The cake was moist and firm with a fine crumb.  That’s probably true of all Yellow Leaf cupcakes.  I LOVE THEIR CAKE!  I have never had a dry crumbly cupcake from there.  It tasted like regular yellow cake to me, nothing to write home about, but no cake left in the container when I threw it away.  ON THE OTHER HAND….

Eggnog icing headed to the trash

I really liked Yellow Leaf’s Italian meringue butter cream icing at first.  It was not too sweet and had a texture similar to ice cream.  Lately, I guess my choices have had icing that isn’t strongly flavored, so I feel like I’m licking a stick of butter.   The mouth feel is slick and without strong flavoring, it just tastes like butter.  Rating for the cake:♥♥, Icing: ♥ so ♥ 1/2 overall.

      • Sweet Licorice and Pumpkin Creme Brulee from Yellow Leaf

        Nov 7th

        Today’s treats from Yellow Leaf:

Sweet Licorice: I don’t like licorice, so this one was for Mr Shuck.  I had a tiny taste and it tasted like licorice.  Mr Shuck thinks, “It was fine, but licorice shouldn’t be in cupcakes.  Licorice should be in licorice.”  Rating:  ♥♥

Pumpkin Crème Brûlèe:  Pumpkin cupcake filled with pumpkin custard topped with vanilla Italian meringue butter cream and garnished with a piece of caramelized sugar.  Great cupcake: lightly flavored cake is moist, creamy filling has delicate pumpkin flavor, caramelized sugar garnish sticks pleasantly to your teeth.  Rating: ♥♥♥

      • Strawberry Banana and Sweet Potato from Yellow Leaf

        Oct 18th

We actually stopped by Yellow Leaf YESTERDAY.  I didn’t want to seem like the sort of person that would visit 2 cupcake places in one day, but apparently I am.   We’ve already established that I have a problem….

Today’s choices:  Sweet Potato with Maple/Brown Sugar icing and Strawberry Banana.

YL Strawberry Banana- click to enlarge

        The reviews:

Sweet Potato:  I am assuming since this is a beige cake and not an orange cake that Yellow Leaf used white sweet potatoes.  (An assumption that was confirmed with a quick email to Michael at Yellow Leaf.)  I think technically the orange ones are yams.  Overall, it was a nice cupcake.  It didn’t have any sweet potato or yam taste; It was a basic spice cake.  I had to concentrate really hard to taste the “maple” in the icing.  Maybe the brown sugar sprinkled over the top interfered.  Yellow Leaf’s cupcakes are typically pretty, but this is somewhat boring since it’s all beige.  Rating: ♥♥

Strawberry Banana:  Strawberry cake filled with banana cream and topped with strawberry and banana icings.   The strawberry part of this cupcake was delicious.  The cake was very moist and had a “natural” strawberry flavor.  There were red specks in the cake and the icing, so I assume real strawberries were used.  The banana filling and icing had an artificial banana taste.  (I wouldn’t expect real bananas to be used since they might turn brown.)  Mr Shuck “really liked it” but it “almost had too much going on”.    My rating: ♥♥♥.  Mr Shuck’s rating: ♥♥♥ 1/2.

      • The first Cinnamon Cupcake belongs to Mrs Shuck

Posted at 7:19 pm by MLea
        Sep 16th

Mr Shuck was nice enough to call me at work today to inquire about my cupcake needs while he was in the immediate Yellow Leaf area.  I called the store and discovered that a new flavor (Cinnamon) was being debuted today.  I sent speedy text back to my beloved indicating my chosen flavor and he stopped by to obtain one for me.   The baker at Yellow Leaf hadn’t even gotten the Cinnamon Cupcakes out of the kitchen, so I ended up with the first one purchased.  Michael of Yellow Leaf informed Mr Shuck that the Cinnamon was similar to their French Toast, so Mr Shuck thought I would be pleased.

The details:  Vanilla cake with lots of cinnamon chips topped with vanilla Italian butter cream sprinkled with cinnamon.

The verdict:  YUM!  You can’t go wrong with Yellow Leaf’s vanilla cake.  The cinnamon chips are probably my favorite ingredient in the French toast cupcake and there are more in the new version.   The cinnamon sprinkled on top of the icing greatly improved the texture and flavor.

        The rating: ♥♥♥
