My hard drive issues came before cupcakes for a couple of days.   I was very grateful for new Yellow Leaf cupcake flavors whilst I was restoring my computer to as close to normal as it can be.

Strawberry Lemonade:  I like Trophy’s Strawberry Lemonade better, but Yellow Leaf’s is Very good.  The cake is fairly dense with a good texture.  The interior photo shows that well.  2 different layered cake flavors is nice.  The icing isn’t as strongly flavored as Trophy’s, but Yellow Leaf’s icing has a nice silky feel.  The lemon icing wasn’t as flavorful as the strawberry, which was very fruity.

White Chocolate Pretzel:  This is probably my second favorite Yellow Leaf flavor and one of my favorite cupcakes so far.  My palate is not as sophisticated as it could be, so I don’t know if it was white chocolate cake or vanilla.  Either way, it was delicious.  There was a layer of white chocolate gluing some pretzel bits directly on top of the cake, then pretzels mixed with white chocolate icing on the top.  I love the mix of sweet and salty and the contrast of crunchy pretzel with silky smooth icing.

Black Forest:  Was just okay.  Chocolate cake with cherry glaze topped with icing.  I think of Black Forest as very cherry/chocolate.  This one seemed like chocolate cake with vanilla icing.  Not much cherry flavor.

Chocolate Orange:  I didn’t like this one, but James did.  Chocolate cake layered with orange cake topped chocolate glaze then orange icing.  The orange tasted a bit artificial.

Some people might choose to drink when presented with stress.  I fortunately have a husband who brought me home cupcakes.  6 lovely little cakes from The Yellow Leaf Cupcake Company.  Today’s selection:

        White Chocolate Pretzel

        Chocolate Orange

        Black Forest

        Carrot (for him)

        Strawberry-Lemonade

Chocolate Toffee (a repeat, but a good one!)

So, I called Yellow Leaf today to see what flavors they had for the day.  Mr Shuck was 2 blocks away volunteering, so I called him to see if he’d pick me up a Mexican Chocolate cupcake.  He agreed.  I thought about it ALL DAY.  I got in the car at the end of the day and was told he forgot!   I still love him.  Since I was in the cupcake mood (when am I not?), we stopped off at Coffee to a Tea in West Seattle to see what Sugar Rush had to offer for the day.  I chose a vanilla cupcake filled with chocolate mousse and dipped in chocolate ganache.

My review:  Extremely cute cupcake. I loved the little flowers.  Very “Life is Good“.   The ganache frosting was lovely.  (I actually think the description said that it was truffle dipped.).  The chocolate mousse inside was creamy, but tasted a lot like J-ello chocolate pudding.  The cake was spongey.  I don’t think I like the texture of sponge cake.  I would eat it again if it was presented to me, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase one.

I ate the remaining cupcake today, The American.  I didn’t realize it had Red Velvet cake at the bottom.  UGH!

So the American Cupcake was cute.  Red Velvet on the bottom, then almond cake dyed blue, then white cake, then white icing.   So much dye!  So much cake that tasted like food coloring.  Oh, well!   It was the Yellow Leaf cupcake for charity, so someone got $1 from my purchase.

Almost finished up the cupcake flavors today!  I know, we’re pigs!

Strawberry:  It would have been better if the icing tasted more like strawberries.  The cake was moist and smelled delicious (and tasted delicious as well).  Most of the icings seem to taste the same.  Very nice silky texture, though.

Carrot:  Good, but not as good as Cupcake Jones.  There were only a couple of visible carrot shreds.  Lots of spice.  I’d have another.

Other flavors:  these are pretty much a combination of the other flavors already mentioned.  All good!

There’s a new cupcakery in town and it’s YUM!  Yellow Leaf Cupcake Company is a small place on 4th Ave near Blanchard.  They have tea and French press coffee, photos of yellow leaved trees on the wall, biodegradable commuter travel mugs.  Very soothing and organic.

We picked up a box of 12, which gave us one of almost every flavor they had today.  I passed on the Red Velvet.  I don’t know why I don’t like Red Velvet.  All the red dye seems a bit much.  Not natural!  We ended up with:

Chocolate toffee, carrot, tomato soup, strawberry
Simply Vanilla, chocolate mint, Chocolate Joy, Chocolate/vanilla
Chocolate/chocolate, The American Cupcake, Ultimate Chocolate, French Toast

        Flavors sampled today:
Tomato soup: Was dark orange colored and tasted of ginger or molasses (my palate is not that sophisticated).  I assume it’s a tomato cake. Kind of carrot cake-ish. The icing didn’t have a lot of flavor. It’s not overly sweet. Would eat again!

Chocolate Joy: Like an Almond Joy candy bar. Layered cake with chocolate on the bottom and almond cake on top. Light chocolate icing on top, covered with coconut and crushed almond. Also very tasty.

French Toast: This is probably right up there with Trophy’s Chocolate Graham Cracker! Vanilla cupcake with cinnamon chips around the top. Extremely buttery buttercream on top with a little syrup swirl. Over the top YUM!
        Yellow Leaf's French Toast

Simply Vanilla:  Nicely flavored and textured vanilla cake with vanilla Italian butter cream icing.  Very good!
        Yellow Leaf's Simply Vanilla

Chocolate Toffee:  YUM!  Moist and dense chocolate cake with toffee chips around the top.  A scoop of light and silky chocolate frosting topped with more toffee chips.

Two details I really like:  1.  They have a cupcake a day that has $1 of it’s proceeds donated to charity.  It’s garnished with a little yellow leaf.  2.  The owner offered a “legend” to go inside the box so we knew later what cupcakes we had in there.

So…on the way back from Portland today, we stopped at Cupcake Jones.  Seriously, does anyone expect me to go somewhere and not visit the local cupcakery?  We went there on our engagement trip and LOVED the cupcakes we got that day: Root Beer Float for James and Chocolate Covered Pretzel for me.

        We got an assortment:

        • Downtown Cupcake Brown:  delicious devil’s food cake filled with sour cream chocolate ganache topped with fresh grated dark chocolate.
        • Pearl:  white velvet cake filled with vanilla bean pastry cream, topped with vanilla bean buttercream icing and a hand made white chocolate pearl  (we got the mini, so no filling)
        • Raspberry Truffle:  chocolate cake filled with chocolate raspberry ganache, topped with raspberry buttercream, chocolate shavings, and a raspberry (also a mini, so no filling)
        • What’s Up Doc:  moist carrot cake filled with vanilla bean pastry cream topped with cream cheese icing and a hand made candied carrot
        • Chocolate Chip Cookie: fluffy brown sugar chocolate chip cake filled with chocolate chip cookie dough, topped with vanilla bean buttercream and a homemade chocolate chip cookie
        • Pupcakes: apple and oat cupcakes for the puppies!

        The review so far:

        • The puppies loved the pupcakes.  I don’t think this means much since they also lick their butts, but they have said, “No” to treats before.
        • Downtown Cupcake Brown: The cake part was a bit dry.  I didn’t like the sour cream chocolate ganache.   The chocolate icing was good.
        • Chocolate Chip Cookie:  So far, I’ve only had a mini, but there’s a big one with filing waiting on me.  The cake was good: moist, not dry.  The icing didn’t have much taste.  Update 7/13/09:  Today I ate the big one with the filling.  The cake was fairly moist, but the filling was dry.  It kindof tasted like cookie dough, but was a little dry.  I know they can’t put raw dough in a cupcake, so I don’t know what I was expecting.
        • What’s Up Doc?:  YUMMY!  flakes of carrot and dots of spices were visible in the moist cake.  The icing was “perfection” according to James.  I thought it could have more cream cheese flavor.  The stuff in the middle was just okay according to him.  I ate a mini and it was really nice.
        • Pearl:  Plain, plain, plain.
        • Raspberry:  This review courtesy of James:  Dry cake, but good frosting.

So, today I used my Williams Sonoma gift card and purchased a kitchen torch and a pastry bag.  Goal: Cupcake perfection.  We had a test cupcake at Trophy for comparison.  I made the cupcakes and icing.  James operated the kitchen torch as it made me a bit nervous.

      • Cinco de Mayo at Trophy

        May 9th

Last week was Cinco de Mayo, so that meant new flavors at Trophy.  Can I just say, “YUM!”  The margarita cupcake was lime cake with tequlia lime buttercream.  There was a sprinkling of salt and some candied lime zest on top.  The Mexican chocolate was a rich chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream with a hint of cinnamon and cayenne. There was just enough cayenne to warm the back of my throat but not my tongue.  I realized today as I was taking pictures of the dogs that I had the camera on “action”. Probably why I had trouble focusing on the cupcakes.  They didn’t move very much!

Our wedding cupcakes were provided by Sweet Pockets in Atlanta.  The big cupcake was a delicious carrot cake with cream cheese icing.  We had an assortment of regular and minis in Strawberry Wawa, Lemon Sunshine, and Caramel Apple.  Hidden amongst the cupcakes were some flying pigs.   It took Mr Shuck 12 years to propose, so I always thought I’d be getting married “when pigs fly”.
